Cosmopolis' Producer Talks Movie, Cannes, & Portuguese Premiere

Paulo Branco, Cosmopolis' Producer, talked about the movie, Cannes and the Portuguese Premiere with Rob, Cronenberg and DeLillo (posted here).

Interview is in portuguese, check the translation under the video:

Translation (RPLife):

I: Paulo, good evening. This is the 11th movie that you produce and has been selected to the competition in Cannes - the most important film festival in Europe. From what we saw in the trailer and from the little we know, this is not an European movie. Is this your most important movie?
PB: Well, as a producer I like to think all movies are important, but this one is special, of course. It's a movie where, for the first time, I worked the way they do on the other side of the Atlantic. It was filmed in Toronto with one of the best directors in the world, David Cronenberg, that was kind enough to listen and accept my proposal, and with great Hollywood actors. And it's the first time I work on a movie this big and with this budget.

I:We're talking about a major production?
PB: We're talking about a medium American production, about 15M Euros. A French-Canadian movie. We had as much support from France as from Canada. Although, it is a budget that indie producers are not used to, especially with the freedom I had to produce this movie: choosing the director, David Cronenberg, and the actors (along with Cronenberg). It was an unique experience. I am proud (for the movie) to be in Cannes now; to be aknowledged. Every movie in Cannes, in competition, they're not just “another movie”. It's always something special, someone who has been and follows the festival, can understand.

I:The cast and crew of this movie is impressive. Famous director, David Cronenberg. The main actors are, I should say, even more famous (Juliette Binoche and Robert Pattinson, from the Twilight Saga). I want to know if there's anything planned for the release of the movie in Portugal in May with them?
PB:Precisely. It was created some sort of empathy with Don de Lillo, David Cronenberg and Robert Pattinson, that since the beginning, when I talked about the idea of doing a small promo tour in Europe to promote the movie, starting in Portugal, they immediately accepted. They'll be here right after Cannes for the Portuguese premiere of the movie. I think it's an unique event, for a movie premiere, in Portugal. And an example of professionalism and devotion from the people that worked in this film. For Pattinson, this project is essential. He watched the movie and personally told me that it was, maybe, the project that he was most proud of and wanted to support it wherever it was necessary. Don DeLillo, one of the biggest writers in the world, when saw the movie... (Interviewer interrupts Paulo Branco)

The last question is hard to understand, Paulo Branco talks about Cannes, promoting and selling movies at the festival.

MTV's 5 Key 'Cosmopolis' Scenes from New Trailer

One of Robert Pattinson's best career moves was accepting the role of Eric Packer in "Cosmopolis."

It's yet another shift away from the sparkly vampire who dazzles those around him. The role is gritty, sexy and no doubt allowed Pattinson to show off his acting chops. Typecast no more, critics. The "Twilight" actor is getting as far away from Forks as possible.

The David Cronenberg film follows Packer in a futuristic, but not too far off, New York City. As he's chauffeured through Manhattan on his way to get a haircut, he watches as everything falls apart around him. His empire decreases every second, riots take place on the city streets and he figure out clues that lead him to the shocking secret of his impending assassination.

The trailer is chock-full of intense moments, and we've put together the five key scenes.

The Office
Pattinson's co-star asks, "Where is your office? What do you do exactly?" We see a long stretch of limos and Eric Packer looking like James Bond as he stands in shades on the sidewalk. This opening scene sets the tone for Packer's character and his downfall as a billionaire who slowly loses control of the world around him.

Rats
As different characters enter and exit his limo, the film's story unfolds. As a passerby on the street holds a dead rat up to his window, one of the women inside with Packer tells him, "This is a protest against the future." While it's unclear what the protest is about, as the trailer continues rats are everywhere. More and more protesters wave them around the streets, one man throws them across a diner and one protester even has a giant rat head on his body. We're not sure what it means, but knowing Cronenberg, it most likely deals with symbolism of America's future.

"I Smell Sex All Over You"
If "Twilight" fans haven't yet realized this role is far from their beloved sparkly vampire, they do now. A smug look crosses the usually awkward actor's face after one of his conquests comments, "I smell sex all over you." Packer shrugs. He knows. Throughout the rest of the trailer, we see small clips of various sexual encounters in the limo that poses as his office — including one half-naked girl who points a laser gun at his chest.

Grab a Gun
Pattinson's no stranger to action. He's torn evil vampires apart, taken a beating in "Remember Me" and escaped a stampede of wild animals in "Water for Elephants." But in "Cosmopolis," we finally get to see the actor pack some heat. In one scene, Packer kicks open a door and pulls a gun on a person in the room. He's taking back control of a day that started out with a hair appointment and is ending with the wildest ride of his life.

Maybe the Gun Wasn't a Good Idea
There's an array of fast clips at the end, all flashing by in a sequence that could give anyone with epilepsy a seizure. But the one that immediately caught our attention has Pattinson shooting a bullet through his own hand. Yikes. Our palms began aching just watching it. From the looks of this trailer, we probably haven't even seen the worst of it yet.

"Cosmopolis" is scheduled to hit theaters later this year.

Rupert Sanders Talks SWATH w/ MTV

"Kristen is a very driven, visceral, intuitive actress. From a director's point of view, it's great to get into her headspace," he explained. "We did a lot of work together on the script and character, and she really helped inform me how that character was feeling, which really helped my process getting the character onscreen. Kristen was doing a lot of her stunt work, she was riding horses, she was jumping from high precipices into freezing cold water, she was fighting dwarves — she's gung-ho."

Sanders said Stewart's co-star Charlize Theron was equally gung-ho with respect to the lengths she went to take her beauty into a dark and horrible place.

"[She] becomes fiendish," Sanders said. "She was willing to get in tubs of black oil, surrounded by dead ravens, and crawl her way out. For a director, what's great about these two actors is that they will go beyond what you ask of them, and I think it really shows in the performances they've given. They're both very unlike any performance I've seen either of them deliver."

"What I'm most proud of is that it's not a popcorn movie in that respect. It's big and it's epic and there's lots of battle sequences, but it really hits you," he said. "There's not a lot of weeping, but it's a very intense ride. You're really at the edge of people's boundari
